RE:Resolution No. 2024-01: Declaring a Local State of Emergency - Page 3

REQUEST:

The request is for City Council to adopt Resolution No. 2024-01 declaring a local state of emergency in response to impacts associated with a strong low pressure system that moved across the State of Florida on January 9, 2024 and to waive the 24-hour notice requirement for this special meeting.

DISCUSSION
:

A strong low pressure system formed and moved east across the Gulf of Mexico causing widespread tornadoes, gusty winds, heavy rain and coastal flooding. On January 9, 2024 Governor DeSantis issued Executive Order 24-03 declaring a State of Emergency for 49 counties including Pasco County therefore staff is requesting that City Council declare a local state of emergency would become effective as of 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 9, 2024.

Per Section 3.01.00(c) of the City's Land Development Code,  emergency meetings may be held at any time by the City Council without complying with the 24-hour written notice provision for special meetings contained in subsection (b) subject, however, to the condition that the majority of the Council members in attendance at such emergency meeting shall agree to waive the 24-hour notice provision.

RECOMMENDATION:

Staff recommends that City Council to adopt Resolution No. 2024-01 declaring a local state of emergency in response to impacts associated with the strong low pressure system that moved across the State and to waive the 24-hour notice requirement for this special meeting as requested.
