REQUEST:
This request is for City Council to approve the EBSCO Solar Grant Agreement, which would award One Hundred Thousand Dollars ($100,000) to the New Port Richey Public Library for the installation of a rooftop solar energy array.
DISCUSSION:
In April 2019, the City's Public Library applied for this competitive, nationwide grant that would allow for funding for the installation of a solar energy array. The goals of applying for this grant were the following:
- the Library could retain power during natural emergency and be a more viable resource to the community by providing lights, power, internet and continued dissemination of public information
- the Library's brown energy consumption would be offset and replaced by clean energy thereby helping "green" the environment while creating a sustainable cost reduction for the City.
- the Library and City are involved with several sustainability initiatives, and utilizing clean energy presents an additional opportunity to make advancements in our community.
- a solar energy installation would initiate worthwhile community-wide conversations and educational opportunities at the Library for the public to learn more about renewable energies and the importance of sustainability.
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends approval of this grant award.
