RE:Request to use Forfeiture Funds to Purchase Rifles and Shotguns

REQUEST:

I respectfully request Council authorize the use of Forfeiture Funds to purchase four Remington shotguns for conversion to “less-lethal” weapons and four Bushmaster AR-15 rifles, including shipping, at a total cost of $4,500.00.

DISCUSSION
:

Currently, all four patrol sergeants are assigned “less-lethal” shotguns, which they keep in their respective vehicles for use in situations justifying the application of that level of force. Each squad is assigned a corporal. Anytime the sergeant is not available, the squad corporal assumes command and responds to all calls requiring a supervisor’s presence. It is my intention to equip each corporal with a “less-lethal” shotgun.

I am requesting four AR-15 rifles. Two are for assignment to newly hired officers and two will be kept on hand as spares in the event any rifles already assigned require repairs.

The four Remington 870P 12 Ga., Police Magnum Shotguns, at a cost of $1,840.00, and four Bushmaster 16-inch AR-15 M4, 5.56 mm Patrolman’s rifles, at a cost of $2,560.00 will be purchased from Lou’s Police Distributors, Inc., 7815 West 4th Avenue, Hialeah, FL 33014. The total cost of these weapons, including a $100 shipping fee, is $4,500.00.

RECOMMENDATION:

I recommend the purchase of the shotguns and rifles listed above from Lou’s Police Distributors, Inc., at a total cost of $4,500.00.

BUDGET/FISCAL IMPACT:

There will be no direct impact to the police department’s budget as I am requesting authorization to use funds from the Department’s Forfeiture Fund Account.
