RE:Request to Purchase a Police K-9

REQUEST:

I am requesting Council authorize the purchase of a Police K-9 at a cost of $9,000.

DISCUSSION
:

The police department currently has only one K-9 team and that dog is approximately six years old. The typical working life of a Police K-9 is seven to nine years depending upon the condition of the individual dog. (Ideally, it would be practical to have one assigned to each of the department’s four squads.) I am requesting authorization to purchase a second dog at this time utilizing monies already donated to the police department by citizens and Equitable Sharing monies.

A canine purchased for police purposes requires a high level of breeding and preliminary specialized training to meet the demands of police K-9 service. Each dog has unique characteristics and abilities that are evaluated by experienced and highly qualified K-9 Trainers. In this case, the trainers agree our selected dog is exceptional.

This dog would be purchased from Southern Coast K-9, Inc. -- 690 Meta Lane, New Smyrna Beach, FL 32168. This supplier has a reputation for providing the highest quality animals in our region at reasonable pricing. The cost for the selected dog is $9,000.

RECOMMENDATION:

I respectfully request Council authorize the purchase of a Police K-9 at a cost of $9,000 from Southern Coast K9, Inc.

BUDGET/FISCAL IMPACT:

There will be no direct fiscal impact to the department’s budget as the dog will be purchased utilizing monetary donations already made to the department by citizens ($3,913.75) and the remainder ($5,086.25) from the Department’s Equitable Sharing account.
