RE:Compensation Study by Cody & Associates, Inc. RE: Fire Department

REQUEST:

The request is for the City Council to adopt the Compensation Study in respect to the Fire Department which was conducted by Cody and Associates Inc. and additionally to authorize the implementation of the recommended pay plan.  Staff also requests that City Council approve the accompanying budget amendment for this agenda item.



DISCUSSION
:

As Council is aware, the City contracted with Cody and Associates, Inc., a management firm specializing in public sector Wage, Salary, and Classification studies, earlier this year to conduct a review of the Fire Department Pay Plan.  As part of their work to determine if the pay plan was representative of current market wages, a compensation comparison study was conducted with five comparable communities.  At the conclusion of the study it was determined that all of the positions studied were under market and therefore in need of adjustment in order to reflect the present market.

  

Certainly, it can be said that employees are our most important resource and a competitive and equitable pay plan is an effective means by which to attract and retain qualified personnel to careers within the city.



RECOMMENDATION:

The recommendation is to adopt the pay grades and step plan as recommended by Cody and Associates, Inc. in the Compensation Study and authorize the City Manager to implement the pay plan.



BUDGET/FISCAL IMPACT:

The funding to cover the cost associated with this agenda item is $46,171.65 and is available in the FY 2020/2021 General Fund Budget.  In that respect, please find a corresponding budget amendment request attached to this communication.
