The City received an application for a proposed indoor recreational axe throwing business at 5761 Nebraska Avenue. The subject property is located within the City’s Downtown Zoning District. The requested use is not listed as neither a permitted nor prohibited use in the Downtown Zoning District. Within the City’s Downtown Zoning District uses that are neither permitted nor prohibited may be approved by the City Council through the approval of a conditional use. To approve the conditional use the City Council must find that the proposed use contributes to the revitalization of Downtown, compatible with the Downtown’s character, and consistent with other use allowed by right within the Downtown Zoning District.
In review of the conditional use application City staff had the following findings:
1. Indoor recreational axe throwing businesses is a growing business in the Tampa Bay Region. There are several indoor recreational axe throwing businesses in the region.
2. The proposed recreational axe throwing business is located inside the building and is not anticipated to have external impacts significantly different than other existing uses in the Downtown.
3. The addition of the proposed recreational axe throwing business will add to the diversity and activity of the City’s Downtown.
Additionally, the applicant provided operational standards for their proposed business that assures the safe operation of the business. These operational standards are included as a condition included within Ordinance 2021-2236.
Public notice for the proposed conditional use was provided as required by the Land Development Code. As of August 26, 2021, no responses to the noticing were received by the City.
