REQUEST:
The request is to provide financial support in the amount of $10,000 for the Dinosaur and Dragons Exhibit being hosted at the Harry Schwettman Education Center.
DISCUSSION:
Late last year, I was contacted by Charles Zidar who was interested in financial support for his 501 ( c ) (3) not for profit organization, Museum of Archaeology Paleontology and Science Inc. in respect to what was at the time the pending Dinosaur and Dragon Exhibit planned for placement at the Schwettman Education Center. Specifically, Mr. Zidar asked for an appropriation of $10,000 to be used as payment to Duke Energy towards the costs associated with operation of the site during the exhibit time period. As you already know the exhibit opened on December 9, 2022 and will run through February 26, 2023. The exhibit is open starting on Thursday and spanning through Sunday each week between the hours of 4:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. The cost to view the exhibit is $20.00 per person and $50.00 per person for the full experience which includes:
- Dino Rides
- Large Dig Pit (Guaranteed Sharks Tooth)
- Egg Laying Triceratops
- Fossil Shark Tooth Jewelry Making
RECOMMENDATION:
The recommendation is twofold. First, it is to provide the first 500 city residents that choose to attend the exhibit on predetermined dates with a discount of $10.00 per ticket. The second part of the recommendation is to provide an appropriation up to $5,000 to be used to cover the cost of electrical service during the time period of the exhibit.
Incidentally, I initiated a contact with Duke Energy and as a result they have committed verbally to a financial contribution of $5,000 to this worthy program.
BUDGET/FISCAL IMPACT:
There are funds to cover this expenditure available in the City Council’s budget line item for special events account no. 001011-44961. | | | |
