RE:LED Crosswalk System Purchases

REQUEST:

The action requested of City Council is to review and consider the approval of the attached proposal from Universal Signs and Accessories Inc., in the amount not to exceed $85,526.90 for the purchase of two (2) LED Crosswalk Systems.  The proposal contains pricing in accordance with the current OMNIA Cooperative Contract #2020-200.

DISCUSSION
:

As City Council is aware, the North River Road Street project is in the construction phase.  Included in the project is the proposed installation of an FDOT special emphasis pedestrian crosswalk at the intersection of River Road and Green Key Road. At its current state, the intersection is located on a curvature segment of River Road. Safety concerns for pedestrians crossing at the intersection are present due to the limited visibility for drivers traveling south.   Therefore, the need to upgrade the intersection crosswalk to an LED system has been recommended by staff to City Council.

City Council is also aware, redevelopment downtown has created more pedestrian and vehicle conflicts.  Several complaints have been received from business owners and patrons about the difficulties crossing and pedestrian near misses with vehicles on Grand Blvd. near the intersection of Missouri Avenue.  Public Works maintenance crews have restriped the existing crosswalk and recommend to City Council the need to upgrade the intersection with an LED system to improve pedestrian crossing safety.

RECOMMENDATION:

Approval of the purchases are recommended.

BUDGET/FISCAL IMPACT:

These two pieces of equipment are budgeted in the current Capital Equipment/Improvement Program with funding identified as Local Option Gas Tax Dollars.
